First part in our series of MINI Maintenance Tips – How to check your oil with the worst dipstick in the world!
Engine oil is the elixir of life for your MINI and they can be pretty greedy! If you are hearing any strange rattles or the car is running a little rough, first of all, you need to check your engine oil.
MINIs have, in our opinion, probably the worst dipsticks in the world. The corrugated design means that it’s difficult to tell exactly where the oil level sits so if you don’t want to ever hear the ‘death rattle’ of timing chain doom, it’s imperative to make sure you are getting an accurate reading.

There’s a saying on certain MINI forums – “Love my MINI, Hate my MINI” – without proper maintenance, your MINI will develop problems. Why risk it! Check you oil, book it in for a service every year. It doesn’t just save you problems and money down the line; proper MINI maintenance will make you money if you ever come to sell it. We only buy cars with full or close to full service history. That way, we know that the cars moving parts have been well cared for and are less likely to break.
