Regular MINI servicing is the key to limiting many of the most common MINI problems. The BMW VANOS system relies on a fair bit of oil, hence MINIs are notorious for being rather thirsty. Many rattles, idling issues and strange noises are often misdiagnosed as timing chain and high pressure fuel pump issues when often it can be as simple as lack of oil or a sensor fault.

MINI Problems

Don't Have to Be BIG Money

MINIs have developed somewhat of a reputation for being temperamental. A Google search of ‘MINI R56’ will return a lot of results which strike the fear of God into future MINI owners. Quite often, MINIs are mis-diagnosed when things go wrong leading to big bills for unnecessary work to be carried out.

Servicing and maintaining your MINI is paramount to its health and wellbeing but sometimes things do go wrong.

Common MINI issues include the following:

  • Thermostat / thermostat housing – R56 models – MINI ONE, COOPER, COOPER S and John Cooper Works
  • Sensors: Camshaft position sensors, VANOS solenoids, coolant temperature sensor, lambda, pre and post-cat sensors
  • MINI R56 Cooper S Timing Chain – N14 engines
  • MINI R56 Cooper S N14 – High Pressure Fuel Pump
  • Auxiliary Belt
  • Valve Stem Seals – more often on the MINI COOPER R56

Many of the above issues are cheap and easy to fix. Over the years some of these ‘MINI’ issues have become a licence to print money for main dealers. Regular MINI maintenance can help to prevent some of the more common issues becoming catastrophic failures.

WARNING: Starving your MINI of oil will cause serious engine damage!
